He watched her sleep. She slept face up, clutching his hand in hers. Kenshin smiled. Tucked in his arms her warm body was a fragile reminder of what he lived for. She stood for what he had fought for. She smiled, a look of happiness came on her face. Kenshin frowned when her happy looked was replaced with a troubled one. He vowed to chase all her fears away.

A pair of arms wrapped around him, "You know," she said, "Sometime soon she has to be put to bed."

Kenshin smiled, "I know but I love watching her sleep."

"You always put her to sleep with your stories." she said, "She’s so eager to know more."

"She has your love of kendo." he said.

    "She’s too young."

    "Agreed." he said.

He felt a gentle kiss on his cheek. "Put her to bed, don’t worry." she said.

Kenshin sighed, "Living with you made me realize that every day is important." he placed her in bed and pulled the covers under her chin. "Good night Hanae." he said softly.

Kaoru kissed her forehead, "Sweet dreams."

Kenshin took Kaoru’s hand and they left the room silently.

    Hanae smiled and whispered, ". . . to-san . . . kaa-san. . ."

Hanae woke up and started crying. Moments later a pair of arms picked her up.

    "Hana-chan, what’s wrong?"

Hanae stopped her crying and whispered, "I’m afraid!"

    "Of the dark? Of monsters?"

    "I’m afraid! I dreamed I lost ‘to-san and ‘kaa-san!" she cried.

The arms tightened around her, "Don’t worry Hana-chan, oto-san is here for you."

"Hai." she said burying her face in his chest. The familiar smell of her father surrounded her, comforting her.

Hanae fell asleep in Kenshin’s arms. He looked down at her, "I would do anything to save you and your mother’s life." he whispered. He carried her to his futon and placed her in the middle.

Kaoru’s arms wrapped around her daughter, "Again?"

"Ehhh." he said as he slipped into bed. His arms wrapped around the both of them. He chuckled at a memory.

    "What?" she asked.

"I remember the black eye you gave me on our wedding night." he said. "That’s the last time I ever try to do that. I remember Sano saw the black eye and laughed, he said that only Jou-chan could give me black eye on our wedding night."

". . . don’t remind me." Kaoru’s voice sounded a bit embarrassed. "I got used to it, and that’s how we got Hana-chan." she said slyly.

Kenshin could feel his face warm up. It was his turn to be quiet.

Kaoru chuckled and kissed both their foreheads, "Oyasumi Hana-chan." she whispered, "Oyasumi oto-san."

Kenshin smiled as he slipped off to sleep with his prize in his arms.
