Kenshin waited silently on the steps in front of the dojo. Kaoru had gone into that room with Akira before he left and she had not left the room after he returned. He closed his eyes as if to keep away all the invading thoughts in his mind.
Akira must have proposed. What else could take that long? He broke off his train of thought before he could answer that question.
Kaoru. . . aishiteru. . . I really do, he thought sadly, If only you loved me back.
His thoughts were interrupted by the soft sound of a door being opened. He turned and said, "Kaoru-dono-" he stopped when he saw the look on her face. She looked serious.
"Im sorry." she said to him. Her eyes were serious. "I have to be with him right now."
Kenshin felt his heart break. He was in shock. Was it true? He thought he had no heart to break, but Kaoru proved him wrong. He forced a smile and said, "Its alright, I understand Kaoru-dono."
Kaoru smiled and said, "Thank you for understanding." she slipped back into the room and closed the door silently.
"Kaoru-do-no. . ." he choked out. To one day not say the "dono" part. When would that be? He looked up at the sky and sighed, "Kaoru-don-." he whispered, "Ka-kaoru. Kaoru. Kaoru." her name rolled off his tongue easily.
He bowed his head and said, "Kaoru-dono, Kaoru-dono, Kaoru-dono. Sayonara. . . Kaoru-dono."
He slipped into his room, wrote a quick letter and looked at the corner of the room where a small chest sat. He opened it and pulled out the few items he owned. At the bottom of the chest was a small yellow drawstring bag and packed which was relatively quick. He looked around the room to see if he was missing anything and then sighed and left the room. He walked slowly as if to memorize Kaorus home, his home.
He thought he had found his home, but once again he was to wander. This time feeling more alone than before. He picked up his sword and his small bag and walked to the courtyard. He stared at the doors of the dojo and then walked to Kaorus door.
Kaoru sighed as she looked out the window. She was trying to meditate but it didnt seem to work. With the quiet of the night and the moonlight spilling on the dojo floor, it lulled her to sleep. She remembered what Aki-kun had begged her.
"Please," he said, "Wait for me tonight, Im going out. I need you right now." She promised him and said, "Ill wait until the moon begins to set."
He nodded and then slipped out of the room silently. Kaoru opened the door of her room and said, "Ken-" he was gone. She sighed, he was probably asleep. She decided to go to the dojo and meditate while she stayed up.
She looked out the window and said, "Bah, Aki-kun, making me wait out here, and just when its getting cold." she rose, shivering from the winter air. Kaoru shook her head, "The moon is going down." she wrapped the shawl around her body a bit tighter and decided to go to sleep.
She rounded a corner and saw Kenshin standing at her door. He looked sad. He also had a bag in his hand and his sakaba sword. He was going to wander again? Kaoru suddenly panicked and opened her mouth to speak to him but was stopped by Kenshins sigh. He rose his hand to knock on the frame but then dropped it. He reached into his bag and pulled out a folded piece of paper and tucked it between the silk screen and the frame. He whispered, "Goodbye, Kaoru. . . Kaoru-do-no." he choked at the "dono" part and bowed his head. He rose his head and walked away.
Kenshin walked slowly as if to delay his departure. Each step broke his heart.
"I love you too . . ." a soft voice said.
Kenshin turned around and saw Kaoru standing in the moonlight. She looked beautiful. She was holding the note in her hand. She held her other hand out, "Kenshin..."
He dropped his bag and quickly closed the gap between them. He held her in his arms.
"Dont go," she whispered, "what will I do with out you?"
He buried his face in her hair, "I promise I wont leave you."
Kaoru looked up at him. She reached up and touched his face, "Lets go to sleep, ne?"
He nodded silently. Kaoru turned and opened her door. She took Kenshins hand and led him inside. She closed the door behind him and took her time lighting a candle. She placed her shawl on a teak trunk and slipped under the covers. Kenshin silently did the same. He wrapped his arms around her as Kaoru snuggled closer to him her face buried in his chest.
He took it all in, her smell, her soft breathing, the solid state of her body in his arms. He felt her reach for his hand and he turned it so that she could twine her fingers with his.
"I- I- I thought I lost you." he said sadly.
"No, no, no!" she cried. "I almost lost you! I told you Id follow you no matter where you go!" she pulled her hand from his and punched him. He deserved every punch she gave him. It was retribution for making her cry. She calmed down and looked up at him. "Why did you think that?"
"Akira-dono." he said softly. "He can offer you everything, even the age. What can I offer you? I dont even think Im worthy of you."
Kaoru shook her head, "No, I love you!"
Kenshin felt a wave of relief wash over him, "So do I."
"Besides," Kaoru said, "Akira loves Seira. He has ever since he saved her. He was frantic today. He came home to ask her to marry him and he discovered that she was gone and her things were gone. Kenshin, Akira is so heartbroken. He cant eat or sleep. Hes searched all over Tokyo for her and he cant find her. She left like that, silently."
Kenshin tightened his grip on Kaoru. He almost did the same. He almost broke Kaorus heart. "Never, Ill never leave you again." he breathed laying soft kisses on her forehead.
She reached up to his face and touched his scar. "I would wait forever for you to say that to me."
He rolled over so that he was almost on top of her. He pushed her hair away. This girl, who was so much younger than him, loved him, loved him! With slightly trembling hands, he cupped a side of her face and brought his head down for a kiss. He had only stolen kisses from her when she slept but now she was awake and responding.
That night Kenshin rose his head to see Kaoru crying, but they werent tears of sadness. Kenshin realized that he too was crying tears. They both mixed together, the same way their hands were twined together, a silent promise to never let go.
