"Aoshi-sama, I'm so happy," Misao sighed contentedly as she lay next to Aoshi. "I don't think I could be any happier than I am now..." she declared as she snuggled closer to Aoshi's bare chest.
"Are you sure?" Aoshi asked as he wrapped his arms around Misao's waist.
"Why do you ask?" Misao looked at him suspiciously, her fingers drumming and wandering over Aoshi's chest and stomach.
"Marry me," Aoshi whispered softly but firmly and looked straight into Misao's blue eyes. "I want you to be my wife."
Misao nearly jumped up from excitement. "Hontou? You really mean it?" Misao propped herself up on her elbows.
Aoshi took her hands from her head, and his hands now on her side, pulled her toward him until their lips met in a long kiss. When he finally pulled away, the faint trace of a smile almost tugged at his lips. "What do you think?"
"Oh, Aoshi-sama!" was Misao's reply. "I love you so much." She then put her arms around his neck, and their conversation was continued without words.
"Misao." Okina knocked on Misao's door.
Misao jumped up from her comfortable position next to Aoshi and scrambled about her room, frantically picking up her clothes. "Hold on Jiiya, I'm getting dressed."
"Oh, Aoshi's in there too, isn't he?"
Misao blushed. "Jiiya!" Now, fully dressed, she slid the door open just enough to peek her head through. "What?"
    "A letter from Tokyo."
She grabbed it from him and slammed her door shut. She turned around and almost bumped into Aoshi, who was now fully dressed as well. "It's from Kaoru!" She hurriedly opened it and scanned the contents of the letter. She ran out of her room and announced, "I'm going to Tokyo!"
Okina glanced up. "What's the matter? Another one of Himura's old enemies showed up?" he asked concernedly.
    "No, Kaoru-san had her baby!"
    "Oh, that's wonderful!"
"I thought it'd be about time."
"Is it a boy or a girl?"
"Did she say what the baby looked like?" Okon and Omasu bombarded Misao with questions about the contents of Kaoru's letter.
"Ittekimasu!" Misao waved energetically to the residents of the Aoiya and began her journey to Tokyo, Aoshi beside her.
Okina had thought it be best that Aoshi accompany her so that Misao would not have to go all the way to Tokyo by herself, and she would probably enjoy his company most. The rest of the Oniwabanshuu had winked at him as well as Misao, but he pretended not to notice.
Dusk came, and there was not a single building in sight.
"Ano...Aoshi-sama, where should we set up camp?" Misao did not wait for Aoshi to answer. "How about right here?" she suggested, standing right next to a massive tree that would doubtlessly provide shelter for the night.
Misao gazed at the stars as she lay on the cold ground. "Aoshi-sama, are you awake?"
    "Ee..."
"Did you really mean what you said this morning?"
"Yes." Aoshi paused for a second. "Have you changed your mind?"
"No, of course not! It's just that...it's just that maybe it's all too good to be true."
Aoshi did not reply, so Misao turned and went to sleep.

"Oh, I'm starving. What's for lunch?" Yahiko asked as he entered, after he had just finished his morning practice. "Oh no. Ugly's cooking again..."
"Fine, if that's the way you feel, then don't eat!" Kaoru exclaimed as she threw various objects at him.
"Maa, maa, Kaoru-dono," said Kenshin, trying to smooth everything out. "You'll wake up Aiko-dono."
"Kenshin! I told you to stop calling me Kaoru-dono! And Aiko's our daughter!"
    "Sumimasen, Kaoru-do..."
Kaoru gave her husband the look of death.
"Kenshin, what did you do to Jou-chan now?" Sanosuke asked as he came in. "Never mind. So what's for lunch?"
"You still come here to leech off me? Don't you have a family to feed now?" Kaoru transferred her glare to Sanosuke.
"Megumi's busy working. And Ayame and Suzume are playing with Souzou and Aki. Besides, Megumi can support us."
"Not the way you two are going..." Yahiko muttered.
    "What did you say?"
"I said, Megumi can't support you at the rate you two are having kids."
    "Why, you..."
Sanosuke and Yahiko began their usual brawl while Kaoru and Kenshin watched (with a sweatdrop).
"Kaoru-san, are you home? Kaoru-san!" a voice called from the front gate.
Kaoru quickly got up to greet her visitor. "Aa, Misao-chan! What a pleasant surprise! Come on in."
"Oh, Aoshi and Weasel Girl are here, too? My day just keeps getting worse and worse," Yahiko commented.
    "KANSATSU TOBI..."
Kaoru managed to hold Misao back from making holes all over Yahiko's body. "We were just about to have lunch. Why don't you join us?"
"Hai, Kaoru-san. Itadakimasu." Misao dug in with a voracious appetite. The rest, except for Aoshi, stared at her in amazement as they chewed on the not-quite-satisfactory food.
"Oi, Jou-chan, you made this, huh?" Sanosuke looked at Kaoru with an accusing eye. "Kenshin would never make food this bad."
Kaoru began to thoroughly beat the stuffing out of Sanosuke.
"Gochisousama deshita. Boy, am I full. I wonder why I ate so much," Misao said as she leaned back, totally stuffed and then promptly passed out.
Then the sound of crying pierced the air.
"Aiko-chan!" Kaoru exclaimed, as she stopped beating on Sanosuke and quickly left, Kenshin following her.
"What's wrong with Misao?" Yahiko asked.
"I don't know but Weasel Girl sure ate a lot," Sanosuke replied.
"Perhaps the reason for this is she's eating for two," said Aoshi calmly.
All Sanosuke and Yahiko could do was stare at Aoshi. Aoshi just sipped his tea.
"Oh, she's so cute!" Misao exclaimed as she watched Kaoru cradle little Aiko in her arms. "She looks just like you except with Himura's violet eyes."
"Aiko has brought only joy to my life from the day she arrived," Kaoru stated as she caressed little Aiko's cheek with a fingertip.
Misao sighed wistfully. She wondered what it would be like to have Aoshi's child. Would she be as happy as Kaoru? She sure hoped so. Then a wave of nausea hit her.
"Excuse me," she said and quickly left the room.
"Misao-chan?" Kaoru stared after her in surprise.
"Ah, all white," Kenshin smiled in satisfaction as he held up the laundry he had been at which he had been scrubbing. "Misao-dono?"
Misao ran him over and began vomiting in the bushes.
    "Oro~"
"Ah, I feel much better," Misao said when she finally got up from bending over the bushes.
"Misao-chan, are you all right?" Kaoru asked with a worried look on her face.
"I'm fine, really," Misao assured her.
"She's been like that ever since we left Kyoto," Aoshi informed them as he had just come back from his morning meditation.
"Aoshi-sama!" Misao cried out in embarrassment.
"Misao-dono, I really think you should go see a doctor," Kenshin said in a worried tone.
    "But..."
"Come on. Let's go see Megumi." Kaoru dragged Misao along with her as one would a reluctant child.
"I see. Has your body reacted strangely in any other way?" Megumi asked Misao.
"Yesterday, Weasel Girl was so hungry she even ate Jou-chan's cooking. And a lot of it too," Sanosuke said from the back of the room.
Kaoru whacked him on the head and threw him out of the room. "This is none of your business!"
Souzou and Aki could be heard from outside. "‘Touchan, ‘touchan, did Auntie Kaoru give you that bump on your head? How come?"
    "Yeah, ‘touchan, how come?"
"I think I can surmise what you have..."
"What? Is it serious? I'm not going to die, am I?" Misao looked at her anxiously.
"Is it..." Kaoru whispered something to Megumi so low that it was inaudible to the ninja girl.
"Yes, I think so," was Megumi's answer.
"What? What?" Misao asked, starting to panic. She was too young to die!
Kaoru smiled. "Misao-chan, has anyone told you about...as the Westerners put it, the birds and the bees?"
Misao stared at her blankly and then blushed. "Okon had that little talk with me before I left to find Aoshi." Then she paused, letting everything sink in. "You mean I...I'm pregnant?"
    "Omedetou, Misao-chan."
"Aoshi better marry you soon. Or is he not the father? Ohohohohoho." Megumi teased Misao, who was blushing bright, bright red.
"Megumi, don't tease Misao. You were already bad enough when you told me I was going to have Aiko." Kaoru remonstrated, protecting Misao from Megumi's "foxy" ways.
"Heh, so that bastard Shinomori was right. He's got more balls than I thought," Sanosuke said to himself, sitting right outside the door.
Misao left the clinic in a daze, with Kaoru guiding her.
"Misao-chan?" Kaoru waved her hand in front of Misao's eyes.
"Huh? What? We're here already?" Misao looked at her surroundings in confusion.
"Come on. I want to check on Aiko. Then maybe you should find Aoshi and tell him the good news." Kaoru winked at the blushing ninja girl. Kaoru then left Misao to her thoughts.
She came into Aiko's room just as Kenshin was tucking in their baby. Their darling baby.
"Shh, she's sleeping." Kenshin put a finger to his lips and then ushered Kaoru out the door.
"She's such an angel," Kaoru sighed as she rested her head on Kenshin's shoulder.
"So are you." Kenshin put an arm around his wife's shoulders, and they strolled out into the front of the dojo.
"So how is Misao-dono?" Kenshin asked.
"She'll be fine," Kaoru assured him. She gave him a look that told him without a doubt Misao's physical state.
"Ah, is that what happened?" Kenshin smiled. "I hope Misao-dono will be happy as we are."
    "I hope so too."
Meanwhile, Misao's mind was in a state of turmoil. She was overjoyed that inside her was Aoshi's child. On the other hand, she had no idea how Aoshi would react. Would he be as happy as she? Or would he leave her? Was he ready to be a father? Was she ready to be a mother? With all these doubts clouding her mind, Misao was thoroughly troubled. Sure, Aoshi had proposed to her, and they were bound to have children eventually, but so soon? What should she do?
"Weasel Girl, what's the matter? Did Aoshi dump you?" Yahiko asked as he had just finished teaching the students of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu. It would likely be a few more weeks before Kaoru felt up to teaching again, and Yahiko had taken over once Kaoru had been one month into her pregnancy, so a couple of more weeks would not matter.
Misao did not respond. Yahiko waved his hand in front of her eyes. No response. He snapped his fingers. No response. "OI, WEASEL GIRL!" Yahiko shouted in her ear.
Misao knocked him on the head. "Don't call me that, Yahiko-CHAN!"
They were just about to fight when Sanosuke came along, holding Souzou and Aki, one in each arm. "Hey, Weasel Girl, I thought you'd be celebrating with Shinomori right about now."
Misao blushed. "How...how did...Megumi told you?"
"No, that woman can really keep her mouth shut about some things. I overheard you guys at the clinic." Sanosuke lowered Souzou and Aki to the ground, letting them run off.
"What are you guys talking about?" Yahiko scratched his head and looked at them in confusion.
    Sanosuke whispered something to Yahiko.
"Oh, you mean he was right?" Yahiko asked.
    "Looks like it," Sanosuke answered.
"Who was right?" a bright red Misao inquired.
"The so-called father-to-be. That is, if Aoshi is the father. Or is there someone you should tell us about?" Sanosuke raised an eyebrow at Misao.
"Of course he is! So Aoshi-sama already knows?" Misao wrung her hands in frustration. "In that case, I'll go find him and tell him that I know." Misao marched off determinedly.
"Things just get weirder and weirder everyday," Yahiko commented.
    "Heh, you're telling me."
Misao grew more and more apprehensive as she neared the steps to the temple. Sanosuke and Yahiko said he knew already, but her courage was beginning to fail her anyway. She peered at Aoshi's still figure. He was deep into his meditation.
Best not to disturb him, she thought, and began to descend the steps.
"Misao." Aoshi's call stopped her in her tracks. She began to take off her sandals to enter the temple, but he stopped her. "We can talk on our way back."
They walked side by side quietly. Finally Aoshi broke the silence. "Something is disturbing you."
"Aoshi-sama, I'm...I'm pregnant," Misao finally blurted out.
Aoshi stopped and was silent for a moment, but that moment seemed like an eternity to Misao. "Sou ka?"
Misao was trembling. "Aoshi-sama, are you mad? Are you going to leave me?" Her eyes widened in fear.
Aoshi tilted her chin up and bent down to kiss her. "Of course not. After all it is our child, and I think I'll just have to marry you all the sooner." A faint trace of a smile appeared on his lips.
Misao sagged in his arms in relief. In fact, inside, she was jumping for joy. Then she put her arms around his neck, and their lips met for another long kiss.

Approximately nine months later...

Shinomori Misao was having one of those mornings. She could not get out of bed, and Aoshi was nowhere in sight. But then again, her feet were nowhere in sight either. She began to cry. She was HUGE! She had probably rolled over her Aoshi-sama and crushed him. Well, maybe he deserved it. After all, he was the one who made her this way. "Aoshi-sama..." Misao's eyes started watering, and she broke into sobs again.
Omasu came in. "Misao-chan, what's wrong?"
    "Where's Aoshi-sama?"
"He probably left early to meditate," Omasu suggested.
"Oh," Misao said disappointedly. Then her stomach gurgled. "Nee, Omasu, I'm hungry."
Omasu smiled. "Then let's get you something to eat."
"Oh, the baby kicked," Misao declared excitedly. "Yeah, well, I can't wait 'til you come out too!" She told her bulging stomach. Then, unexpectedly, she heard the sound of liquid hitting the wooden floor. "Oh my god, me and my big mouth," Misao muttered.
"What's the matter, Misao-chan?" Omasu asked. Then she realized what had just happened.
    "Okon, Misao's water broke."
"Hurry, get some towels and hot water, and I'll move her to another room," Okon ordered.
Omasu left quickly to do what Okon said, while Okon led Misao to a spare room. "Here, don't worry. It'll be all right."
Misao had already started her first contraction. "Aoshi-sama..." Misao moaned.

Aoshi returned home just as he heard a scream from upstairs. "Misao!" He ran up the stairs and began to search frantically for Misao, but Okina stopped him.
"She's in that room. But don't go in. She's in labor."
Aoshi then became himself again. He calmly sat right outside the room, and Okina left him alone. Aoshi seemed perfectly calm on the outside, but inside, he was going crazy with worry over Misao. She was a strong girl, he tried to tell himself. But even if she was strong, she still had a slight frame, and it must take a lot of pain for Misao to scream like that. What if she did not survive? He could not bear that. It was all his fault. He should have at least tried to control himself a little more when he was with Misao. No, he should have left her alone. All he ever did was cause her pain. Oh, Misao!
Misao let out another heartwrenching shriek, and then silence. Oh no. Did she survive? He could hear a woman crying inside. And then...a baby crying. He could not hold himself back any longer! He was just about to break open the door, when it slid open, revealing Omasu holding a small bundle in her arms. She offered the bundle to him.
"Congratulations, you have a baby boy."
Aoshi slowly took the baby from Omasu, and cradled him in his arms. Big blue eyes stared back at him. Just like Misao's, he thought. "How is Misao?" He managed to tear his eyes from his little bundle of joy.
"She's sleeping right now. She was totally exhausted." Omasu left Aoshi to announce the great news.
Aoshi went into the room. A disheveled Okon smiled when she saw him and left her cleaning for later, so the newly made father could be alone with his wife and child. Aoshi watched Misao silently, holding his newborn baby in his arms.
Having a sixth sense for his presence, Misao began to stir. Her eyes fluttered open. "Aoshi-sama..."
    "Shh, get some rest."
Misao sighed happily. "Have you thought of a name for him?" she inquired.
    "..."
"I have...How about Hannya?" Misao smiled tiredly.
Aoshi solemnly nodded. Then, for one of the few times in his life, Aoshi smiled. A real, genuine smile.
